From lower paper and ink consumption to reduced energy use and economical set-up and maintenance, Epson has all areas covered."

Life cycle thinking

Think

We consider every aspect of a product’s life cycle from the design stage.

Efficient design for your business and for life

The end of the product life cycle might seem far off, but we are thinking about how we can reduce the environmental impact of our retail and hospitality products from concept through to the end of their useful lives and beyond – and at every stage in between. This stringent focus on eco-design has implications at all stages of the product’s life cycle.

This is how we design ecological thinking into our products:

  • By making them outstandingly reliable and long lasting

  • By designing them to be more energy and resource efficient

  • By making them smaller and lighter

  • By reusing or recycling as much of a product as possible at the end of its life cycle and ensuring that the products we design now will be even more suitable for reuse and recycling at the end of theirs

  • By considering the environmental impact of materials we use during their production and eliminating the use of harmful substances

  • By manufacturing them using the least energy, producing minimum waste and preventing unnecessary emissions

  • By transporting them efficiently to our customers

By scrutinising all aspects of design we can make carbon footprints smaller, reduce your total cost of ownership even further, provide a better customer experience and help to secure a better future for us all.

Environmental vision 2050

We believe that everyone must share responsibility for reducing environmental impact and we work hard to play our part. We have a vision for 2050 which commits us to…

73%

We have reduced the power consumption of our inkjet printers by 73%.

90%

We have reduced the energy consumption of our projectors by 90%

50%

Our ink packaging is fully recycable and made up of a minimum of 50% recycled materials.

24%

We have reduced our CO2 emissions from distribution by 24%.

Better products for a better future

We know that planning for the future requires a strong commitment to the environment. That is why we strive to create innovative products that are reliable, recyclable and energy efficient - better products that use fewer resources.

Choose

We choose raw materials that fit our environmental goals and we use them wisely.

Choose right – making a difference

By carefully selecting our raw materials we ensure that our retail and hospitality printers have the least possible impact on the environment. This includes looking closely at the impact of mining, the oil required to produce plastics, sources of packaging and how each component will affect the weight of the end product.

Packaging

Packaging plays a significant part in a product’s impact on the environment.
We are making changes to reduce this and these go deeper than the crucial step of reducing the size of the products themselves.

We are also:

Create

We create products while reducing our energy consumption and preventing unnecessary emissions.

Bringing down energy consumption

We are reducing the energy we use throughout the production process of our point of sale products. When the materials are delivered to the factory these still need to be turned into actual products. Manufacturing uses energy, creates waste and causes emissions, but our goal is to minimise all three.

Impact of materials used on the carbon footprint

We compared the components of our retail and hospitality printers with those of competitor products to understand the estimated impact of the materials used. In general we can say that the electronic boards have an important impact relative to their weight.

The casing is also an important consideration because it represents a significant proportion of each printer - it makes around 40%* of the total weight, packaging included.

The results showed that the Epson printers use materials that have less impact on global warming during the manufacturing phase than materials used for competitive products.

The Epson TM-H6000IV shows significant savings. Due to its size, the multifunction transaction printer has a higher global warming impact than the standard receipt printers but when compared to the direct competitive product the Epson TM-H6000IV saves 40% of the global warming potential in the manufacturing phase.

This is a clear example of why careful selection of materials at the design stage is so crucial to the effect a retail printer has on the environment.

Deliver

We deliver finished products to our customers in the most efficient, innovative ways.

The best approach from A to B

We are always looking for environmental innovations, but as a manufacturer we currently have no choice but to physically move our products to our customers.

However, we are continually looking to reduce the environmental impact of our supply chain, by:

Reducing emissions

We have been monitoring our shipping volumes, energy usage and CO2 emissions since 2006 and aim to reduce emissions by 1% per unit of sales when compared to the previous year.

Target: Zero emissions

We are continuously working towards our goal of zero emissions and are moving closer thanks to initiatives including:

Use

When you use an Epson printer you keep costs down and minimise your environmental impact too.

Engineered for retail

Recycle

We design products that are easy to recycle and offer raw materials for a second life.

Recycling, re-use and responsible disposal

We work hard under the European Union WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive to minimise wastage at the end of a product’s life in retail.

We are fully committed to the proper disposal of our end-of-life point of sale printers and look beyond the WEEE Directive to find new ways of reusing and recycling parts and consumables.

We also use the minimum amount of energy to reusing and recycling printer components.

Save on paper, save on cost

Our latest Epson point of sale printers feature Top Margin Reduction and Auto Paper-Saving functions that can reduce paper costs and consumption by up to 30%¹. See how your business can shrink its paper usage.

Top margin reduction

Reduce top margin paper waste by printing the logo at the top of the following receipt before the current receipt is cut, reducing paper use by up to 12mm.

Auto paper-saving function

Print shorter receipts by reducing top and bottom margins, barcode size and line spacing.

These functions can be used without changing existing point of sale software, making it even easier to keep operating costs down and reduce the environmental impact.

Here are some clear benefits...

  • With an average receipt length of 20cm the saving equates to around 6cm per receipt and reduced costs
  • There is no text or logo distortion (unlike many competitors, which simply ‘squeeze’ the whole receipt including its content) as only the ‘white’ space is reduced, as well as barcode height. All of which has no effect on the readability of the receipt
  • No logo distortion maintains brand recognition and readability of the receipt. This is not only relevant for normal receipts, but also for credit card receipts where they must conform to strict regulations

Some competitors claim that they can reduce paper consumption by up to 70%. This is based on the assumption that the customer changes paper width from 80mm to 58mm.

Epson retail and hospitality printers can also be used with 58mm paper but we do not take this change into consideration when calculating the paper reduction, as this is not part of the Epson innovation. Of course our customers can switch to 58mm and use the Epson paper saving features to further reduce their paper usage.

Saving potential

The difference can be considerable, for example, using the Paper Saving function over 5 years can equate to reductions of 247 Euros per printer and over 144kg of saved paper. Translated to a retailer’s fleet of 1,000 printers, this can deliver a total cost saving of up to 247,000 Euros.²

Energy consumption

Save energy, money and the environment

Our latest generation point of sale printers, specifically the TM-H6000IV, can reduce power consumption by up to 85% when compared to predecessor and competitive products in its class. This lowers costs for retailers and helps to improve our green credentials.

Epson’s retail and hospitality printers consume considerably less power than competing models. That means reduced operating costs and lower electricity bills. Point of sale printers can be on standby for long periods, so reducing standby power makes a big difference to overall electricity use.

Reducing energy usage by up to 85%

Low setup costs

It is easy to upgrade to Epson point of sale printers. They are fully compatible with previous models, with software tools to minimise the time and cost of upgrades and installations and ensure continued great service to customers.

You may not even need to install new printer driver software because new generation commands are backwards-compatible with previous models.

For example, the new TM-T88V can be operated using existing Windows® drivers for the TM-T88III/TM-T88IV).

TM Virtual Port Driver and Built-In USB

Epson’s exclusive TM Virtual Port driver enables applications to treat the USB interface as a serial or parallel port, so legacy applications can continue to be used in all-USB computer environments. Epson TM series printers with a built-in USB port also support this functionality and can be used as is with no need for interface board replacement.

Silent Install Function

Make setting up your point of sale printers as easy as possible with our printer driver Silent Install function. This allows executable files containing fully configured driver properties and print settings to be included in application program installers.

Windows is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and other countries.

Low maintenance costs

Epson’s point of sale printers have earned a reputation for durability and reliability that is unmatched in the industry. They are built to handle tough environments like shops, banks and restaurants and keep maintenance costs and downtime to a minimum.

They are also easy to monitor and fast to bring back on line if problems should occur – essential in fast-moving retail environments where fast, reliable service is a minimum requirement for customer satisfaction.

Remote monitoring and administration

Stay in control of business with clear monitoring of status and maintenance counters of each point of sale printer on your network, and set print settings for individual printers from a single remote PC.

Auto Recovery

Swapping printer units in and out of service when maintenance is required is easy and causes minimum customer disruption because the Auto Recovery function automatically restores print settings and logo data (available on the TM-88V, TM-T20 and TM-H6000IV).

Global warning impact

Several factors influence the global warming impact of point of sale printers during use:

  • Consumables (production of paper rolls)

  • Electricity in standby and during printing (production of consumed electricity)

  • Transport of the consumables

The figures above identify the use phase as the most important contributor to global warming potential of the product’s life cycle. We have already discussed the advantages of the Epson products with regards to paper and power consumption in the use phase.

With their reduced power consumption Epson products already make a difference. Turning on the Paper Saving Function reduces their carbon footprint even further.

In order to better understand how causes are related to our printers themselves, we have also analysed the their global warming impact without consumables.

This only leaves the use of electricity as a cause of global warming impact in the use phase. This is separated into electricity use during the job mode (printing) and the ready mode (standby).
